Can You Install a Dog Door into Double Glazed Glass?

If your home has double glazed doors, you may be wondering whether a dog door can still be installed.

The answer is yes, absolutely.

However, the process is different from single glazed glass and requires a completely new double glazed unit to be manufactured.

At Platinum Pet Doors, we regularly install pet doors into double glazed glass throughout Sydney.

What Is Double Glazed Glass?

Double glazed glass (also known as an Insulated Glass Unit or DGU) consists of two panes of glass separated by a spacer bar.

The gap between the two panes provides improved thermal insulation, reduces outside noise and helps improve the energy efficiency of your home.

Can You Cut an Existing Double Glazed Unit?

No.

Just like toughened safety glass, an existing double glazed unit cannot simply be cut to install a pet door.

Attempting to do so would:

  • Destroy the toughened glass.
  • Break the insulated seal.
  • Allow moisture to enter the unit.
  • Cause condensation between the glass panes.

Instead, a completely new double glazed unit is manufactured with the pet door opening incorporated during production.

How Does the Process Work?

Installing a pet door into double glazing is a straightforward two-visit process.

Visit One – Measure

We measure your existing double glazed panel and identify the exact glass specification.

This includes:

  • Glass thickness.
  • Spacer width.
  • Overall panel size.
  • Pet door position.

Every panel is custom measured to ensure the replacement fits perfectly.

Manufacturing

A brand-new insulated glass unit is manufactured to match your existing panel.

The pet door opening is cut before the glass is toughened and the unit is assembled.

Because every panel is custom made, manufacturing generally takes around 2–3 weeks.

Visit Two – Installation

Once your new unit has been manufactured, we return to:

  • Remove the original double glazed panel.
  • Install the new insulated glass unit.
  • Fit your pet door.
  • Check everything operates correctly.

The finished result looks like it was installed with the original door.

Will It Still Be Energy Efficient?

Yes.

Your replacement unit is manufactured as a complete insulated glass unit.

The thermal performance and appearance are maintained while incorporating your new pet door.
